WRITING PROCESS

There are five steps in the writing process. This is the process we will use during writers' workshop. The steps are:

  1. Prewriting - "pre" means before - "prewriting" is what you do "before" you start writing. It is what you do to get ideas for your writing.
  2. Some prewritting activities (getting ideas)

    Brainstorm

    Web

    Think

    Read / reread / research

    Talk or confer with others

    Movies / videos

    Listening to others

    Etc.

  3. Drafting - Writing down your rough ideas before you forget them - this just gets you started.
  4. Revising - Improving the rough draft by making changes - The quality of your writing is what you're
  5. concerned with during revising.

    Revise by (Change)

    Add information

    Delete (take out) information

    Reorganize sentences or paragraphs

    Word choice

  6. Editing - Correct errors in mechanic (surface features)\
  7. Check for errors

    Spelling

    Punctuation (. , : ; ' ? ! " ")

    Capitalization

    Grammar

  8. Publishing - Final copy - Neat sheet (revised, edited, and copied over) -- You publish when others will be reading your work.
